SA8000是根据国际劳工组织公约，多边人权宣言和联合国儿童权益公约制定的，涵盖行业和企业规范，它创建了一个衡量社会责任的共同语言，是全球首个可作为第三方认证的道德规范国际标准。它适用于世界各地，任何行业、不同规模的公司，与ISO9001质量管理体系，ISO14001环境管理体系一样，是第一个在社会责任领域可以用于审核和第三方认证的国际标准。

按计划，每隔五年，SAI组织都将对SA8000标准进行一次修订，以确保它的连续性和适用性。2001年12月12日，SAI发布了SA8000标准的第一个修订版，即SA8000:2001。2008年5月发布了新标准SA8000:2008，即目前适用的社会责任第三方认证标准。2014年7月，SAI正式颁布了SA8000:2014标准。

虽然2014版标准已经正式发布，但目前SA8000:2008仍然是唯一适用于认证的标准。自2015年1月1日起至2015年12月31日止，这一年将是SA8000标准的过渡期，组织可以选择采用SA8000:2008版进行认证，或者SA8000:2014版进行认证。自2016年1月1日起，唯一可接纳的社会责任认证标准将统一为SA8000:2014版。这意味着，自2016年开始，所有老版（2008版）的标准必须完成新版（2014版）转换的工作，否则证书将面临失效的风险。
Although the 2014 version of the standard has been officially released, but the current SA8000:2008 is still the only applicable standards for certified. From January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2015, this year will be a transition period of the SA8000 standard, the organization may choose to adopt SA8000:2008 version for certification, or SA8000:2014 version for certification. Since January 1, 2016, the only social responsibility certification standards acceptable will be unified for the SA8000:2014 version. 目前在SAI网站上发布的仅有英文版标准，中文版和其它语种尚在准备和翻译过程中。一些辅助文件和资源也在紧锣密鼓地开发中，将于2014年底前正式发布。
