随着研究的不断深入，系统功能扩展到道路交通运输的全过程及其有关服务部门，发展成为带动整个道路交通运输现代化的“智能运输系统 (Intelligent Transportation System)”。
With the deepening of research, the system function is extended to the whole process of road transportation and related services, to promote the development of intelligent transportation system, the road transportation modernization " ( Intelligent Transportation System ) ".
智能运输系统的服务领域为：先进的交通管理系统、出行信息服务系统、商用车辆运营系统、电子收费系统、公共交通运营系统、应急管理系统、先进的车辆控制系统。
Intelligent transportation system service areas: advanced traffic management system, traffic information service system, commercial vehicle operation systems, electronic toll collection system, public transit system, emergency management system, advanced vehicle control system.
“智能运输系统”实质上就是将先进的信息技术、计算机技术、数据通信技术、传感器技术、电子控制技术、自动控制技术、运筹学、人工智能等学科成果综合运用于交通运输、服务控制和车辆制造，加强了车辆、道路和使用者之间的联系，从而形成一种定时、准确、高效的新型综合运输系统。

智能运输系统主要表现在：

可见，智能运输系统不仅高效、便利，还是“绿色交通”。它即使交通基础设施能发挥最大的效能，又能获得巨大的社会经济效益。
