在中医药国际标准化实践活动中，探索形成了“统筹规划、多点推进、分步实施”的整体思路。李振吉介绍，在国际标准化组织中医药标准化技术委员会（ISO/TC249），中国的针灸针、人参种子种苗两项标准提案已经推进到了DIS阶段，2013年2月，又有6项标准提案通过了NP阶段的投票。2013年，中国还要从产品、管理等方面向ISO/TC249提出一系列标准提案。在中医药国际组织方面，截至2012年，世界中医药学会联合会已经发布10部标准，并在其世界各地的会员中推荐使用，形成了较大的影响。“我们正在实实在在地通过各种渠道积极参与和推动中医药国际标准化活动，朝着主导中医药国际标准制定的目标而努力。”
